Claremont food pantry has new hours

The Inland Valley Hope Partners Claremont Food Pantry has changed its hours. The nonprofit, which provides emergency services and sustenance for families and individuals, will now be open Tuesdays and Thursdays from 12:30 to 4:30 p.m. at the Joslyn Center Annex Building, 650 N. Officials take second look at Claremont's Foothill master plan

A second public workshop addressing the Foothill Boulevard Master Plan will take place on Thursday, April 17 at 7 p.m. in the Padua Room at the Hughes Center, 1700 Danbury Rd.

The first workshop was held last month with more than 50 people adding their input on design elements to be incorporated into different segments of the business Claremont roadway. Proposed additions had included a traffic light at Berkeley Avenue to combat traffic in and out of the Old School House business complex, an expansion of the sidewalk and street trees on the north side of Foothill, between Colby Circle and Mountain Avenue, and added sidewalk, a six-to-eight foot retaining wall and landscaping along the south side between Berkeley and Mountain.

Claremont competes for CoolCalifornia City

Claremont residents are being called on to help the City of Trees make the list in the 2014 CoolCalifornia City Challenge, statewide competition supported by the State of California Air Resources Board to motivate and reward residents for reducing their city’s household energy and motor vehicle emissions.

Participating households are entered in drawings for great prizes. The more points the household has earned, the greater their chances of winning. In addition, funding of up to $100,000 will be provided to the cities that get the most residents to sign up before Friday, May 30.  City and Sustainable Claremont officials encourage residents to take part in the challenge by registering at www.coolclimate.berkeley.edu/challenge/. The competition lasts five months and ends on August 31.

Claremont artists receive local recognition

The artists of Claremont’s First Street Gallery Art Center are on exhibit in Los Angeles. More than 30 works are exhibited between Los Angeles City Council member Bob Blumenfield’s Downtown LA and Reseda offices.

A reception was held in February followed by a presentation to the Los Angeles City Council, recognizing Tierra del Sol and the artists exhibited. Certificates were awarded to both Tierra and the artists. The Tierra del Sol Foundation and First Street has served to empowering individuals with disabilities for more than 40 years. The First Street Gallery Art Center is located at 250 West First St., Suite 120 and is open to the public Monday through Friday, 9 a.m. to 5 p.m. 

Claremont youth center on spring break

The Youth Activity Center (YAC) will be closed this week, April 7-11 in correspondence with the Claremont Unified School District’s spring break. The center will reopen on Monday, April 14 and resume the regular operating hours of 2 p.m. to 6 p.m. For more information, call the YAC at (909) 399-5360. Teens are invited to jump back in on Wednesday, April 16 for the Teen Committee meeting, held at 3:15 p.m. on the third Wednesday of every month. Each meeting is open to the public and the youth of the community are encouraged to attend and share any thoughts or concerns. 

Claremont seniors take the stage

The seniors of Mt. San Antonio Gardens retirement community will take to the stage starting this Thursday for the 11^th annual “Fabulous, Frivolous Follies” performance. Shows run at 3 p.m. on Thursday, April 3 and at 7 p.m. on Friday and Saturday, April 4 and 5 in the Gardens’ Assembly Hall.

The Follies frenzy, a variety show first staged in 1997, spotlights acts by Gardens residents. This year’s presentation includes 14 piano, dance, recitation, chorus and humorous acts. Admission is free for all. To obtain good seats, early arrival is advisable. MSAG is located at 900 E.
