Accident on Indian Hill

A boy and his mother were hit by a car while crossing the crosswalk at Indian Hill Boulevard and 10th Street. I have not been able to get a hold of police yet to confirm reports about the situation. But I have heard through the rumor mill that the mother is in stable condition. The young boy, I believe just 5 years old, was airlifted to Loma Linda Hospital and is responding and moving his limbs. The unfortunate incident happened around 3 p.m. today. A stretch of Indian Hill Boulevard was closed off for quite some time as police cleared the scene. Our prayers and thoughts go out to this Claremont family at this scary time.

  1. Tony, I was coming home from dinner tonight and stopped and spoke with one of the Claremont police officers at the scene around 7:30. He indicated that he too had heard the boy was in good condition, considering. This community is so unique and when something awful happens to one; it really affects us all. So many of us walk that same route everyday and it is scary to think it could happen to any of us. If you are able to find out any further information please update the blog and let the community know if there is anything we can do. Our prayers will be with all parties involved. What a tragedy.

  2. I try to adhere to the posted 30 mph speed limit when on Indian Hill between Foothill and the Village and I always create a traffic jam while the cars in front of me dissapear rapidly into the distance. Where's the enforcement?

  3. Enforcement, that is not the problem. Haven't you seen the big motorcycle cop that sits on 10th just waiting to ticket people that have no idea what the hell the twinkly lights are that "safely" guide Moms and Children to the park and the elementary school. It's really "safe" during midday, children are getting out of school and you cant see the lights if your crossing the street, but the cars are expected to see them and stop. When I first moved to Claremont I wondered what in the heck Claremonters were thinking? How many people need to get hit? Let's dump the trolley and get a proper Stop Light at that intersection....Prayers to all involved.

  4. The issue is not necessarily the failure to stop for the crosswalk. The issue is speed...

...on a street that is signed for 30 mph but is regularly travelled at 40 mph.

May I suggest you all watch the following PSA from New Zealnd:
    http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=fhV5O-it9kY

    50 km/h = 31 mph and 67 km/h = 41 mph

These should run on U.S. TV as well!

P.S. Tony, I'd like it very much if you can identify the type of car and model year as well as the age of the driver in your printed article.

  5. Never mind, the DB has it:

"A 52-year-old woman driving a BMW sport utility vehicle"

Wait, I thought SUV's gave the driver a better view of the road!

    And:

"It does not appear that excessive speed, alcohol, drugs or health problems with the driver played a role in the incident,"

so I guess I better trash what I said above. Still the traffic is averaging above 30 mph and the city needs revenue right now...so put 2 and 2 together.

  6. The twinkly light crossing is an accident waiting to happen...virtually on a daily basis
To the best of my knowledge it is the only one of its kind in California and I believe many drivers approach this intersection and are thoroughly confused. The driver involved in yesterday's accident was apparently not speeding, and hysterically upset.

The area is shaded during the day and a very dark section of Indian Hill at night. Does it not seem odd that the PD would choose this intersection to routinely radar speeders which is an acknowledgement of the fact that the poorly marked crossing is situated at one of the most dangerous spots on Indian Hill. Let's get a stop sign installed there or a signal. There is a park, an elemenatary school...how much more justification do we need? How many more tragedies? I have witnessed three and know there has been one death.
